Is this some kind of Indonesian token? Not at all.
Noken – typical Papua!
In Papua, almost every woman you see is carrying a Noken. The women in the highlands carry all their belongings on their backs in this knotted net bag. The Noken is hung from their heads and enables them to carry all their valuables with them– this can be a small pig, a baby, chickens and vegetables just bought at the market, or fruit and vegetables from their garden.
This way everything is to hand. In addition, the babies are constantly being rocked and are always close to their mom. It leaves the arms free to work and prevents extra strain on the back when bending over. The Noken is made from dried tree bark or orchid stalks. An old but very practical Papuan tradition!
