Christmas in Papua

There are many Christians in Papua, and they enjoy celebrating Christmas. Indonesian and English Christmas Carols can be heard everywhere, in the houses and on the streets. Lots of people dress up traditionally to celebrate.

Helimission also has a Christmas party with a «Bakar Batu», a traditional pork feast that is celebrated on special occasions. This feast is always a lot of fun for everyone, because meat is considered a delicacy. There is a lot of preparation involved, but everyone helps and does their bit, from the youngest to the oldest. A deep pit is dug in the ground, lined with lots of leaves and filled with hot rocks. Then vegetables and sweet potatoes are wrapped in leaves and put in the pit with more hot rocks and the previously prepared pork. Now all it needs is patience until everything has been cooked!

Wishing you all a Merry and Blessed Christmas!
